The mining of precious metals and gems is an inherently unsustainable practice. The best way to minimize harm is to treasure a few precious things. With the right care, the pieces I sell are designed to last for generations.
Recycled and fairmined materials are a step in the right direction, but they are not a solution to environmental harm. Recycling metal uses a lot of toxic chemicals. Fairmining provides better conditions for workers but still contributes to environmental degradation. After doing a lot of research, I have settled on using recycled metals.
It is notoriously difficult to trace the history of individual gemstones, as they are often mined in one country, cut in another, and sold in a third. I prioritize suppliers who can explain where their gems come from and how the people who mined and cut them have benefitted. This often means that the gems are more expensive than their undocumented counterparts, and a smaller range of stones and colors are available. I occassionally use lab-grown gemstones, which will be clearly noted in the item listing.
I ship in sustainable packaging (recycled shipping boxes, recycled tissue paper) that can be reused, recycled, or composted. Each order comes with a keepsake pouch handcrafted from Liberty of London fabric. The pouch’s lining prevents tarnish on silver jewelry and protects gold and gold-filled jewelry when they’re not being worn. These pretty little bags can be reused for travel, to adorn your vanity, or (gasp!) regifting.
