Floral Laurel is fine jewelry crafted with joy by me, Laurel! I took up metalwork in 2017 as a way to balance the stress of finishing my dissertation. I have been making things for as long as I can remember, but something about working with metal just seemed like magic. In 2023, I started Floral Laurel to share that magic with others.
As the name suggests, I take inspiration from the shapes found in nature. But Floral Laurel is also a nod to my love of decorative embellishment. We often talk about "decorative" things as if they are either useless or unnecessary, but I believe they are precisely the things that bring delight to our lives. Creating objects of beauty that will be worn and treasured genuinely gives me great joy. This is why I say that everything I make is crafted with joy in San Francisco!
All pieces are handmade by me in my studio. I use traditional hand-forging techniques (not casting) so each piece is individually made. I typically devote several hours to each and every piece I produce. When it would benefit the wearability and usability of the item, I incorporate manufactured chains, clasps, and other findings.
I am a one-woman business. The proceeds go to supporting the purchase of tools, materials, and overhead costs. I calculate the price of individual items based on the cost of the materials and time that went into making them.
We should treasure the gems and metals that are already out of the ground. If you have an old piece of fine jewelry that is no longer a treasure to you, I would be happy to help you reimagine it into a new form.
